Social Skills for Children Ages 2-16

Social Skills Group Classes

Social Emotional Learning

Social City provides social skills group classes for students of all levels and abilities who are grouped according to their age, grade, language skills and social-emotional functioning.

What to expect:

  • Prior to enrolling, a two-part consultation is required in order to determine if our program would be beneficial for your child.

    • A parent/caregiver phone call to learn more about your child, share information about our program, and answer any questions you may have.

    • A zoom meeting with your child to learn about their interests, get a sense of their personality and informally assess their language and communication skills.

  • A unique curriculum created for each group, based on students’ individual goals and areas of need. Please click here to view our curriculum outline.

  • Weekly sessions led by a certified speech and related professionals who specialize in pragmatic language skills and social-emotional learning.

  • Sessions include a group conversation, interactive lesson, collaborative games, crafts and/or projects, and movement activities. Children/teens have the opportunity to practice social skills while interacting in a natural way with their peers, immersed in fun, engaging activities.

  • During the lesson portion, a target skill is introduced in an interactive and engaging way through group discussions, visuals, short video clips, individualized role play opportunities and group games which support and reinforce the target skill.

  • Weekly class summary emails are sent to the child’s team. These emails outline the skills targeted and include tips and strategies that can be used to reinforce the learned skills throughout the week (in between classes).

  • Over the course of the semester (every 5-6 weeks), phone calls led by your child’s group leader are held to discuss your child’s individual progress and performance at Social City. This is also an opportunity for you to share any feedback, updates, and/or ask any questions you may have.

  • Coffee & Conversation:  An opportunity for parents/caregivers to meet in person, get to know one another, share and support each other; facilitated by a Social City group leader.

  • Dedicated therapists who are happy to be in touch with families (or anyone on the child's team) throughout the semester. The more information we have and the more we work together as a team, the quicker our students tend to generalize the skills being taught.

We offer 3 types of social skills group classes including:

  1. Social Skills: Group classes for students whose language, self-regulation and cognitive skills are relatively age-appropriate. Ages 3 - 12 years old, with 7 -9 students led by 2-3 staff.

    a. Ages 3 - 12 years old, with 7 -9 students led by 2-3 staff.

    b. Ages 13-18 years old or 7th -11th grade (teens), grouped according to age/grade, with 8 - 9 students, led by 2 - 3 staff. In addition to social, communication, and relationship skills, the teen groups address life and executive functioning skills, including organization, collaboration, decision-making, scheduling, problem-solving, compromise, flexibility, and time and money management by incorporating 3-5 trips per semester. Therapists and students work together to discover common interests and brainstorm and plan trips. Please find more details about teen trips on the visual to the right.

  2. Social Skills with Additional Language Support: Group classes for students who would benefit from extra support in the areas of expressive, receptive, and pragmatic language.

  3. Social Skills with Additional Self-Regulation Support: Group classes for students who would benefit from extra support with self-regulation, impulse control, and emotional management strategies (currently offering these groups for ages 3 - 12 years old).

All groups follow the same process and structure, mentioned above. Our consultations team will determine appropriate group placement after your 2 - part consultation)
